International mission to Denmark and Sweden: toward food systems designed by and for people

As part of its international initiatives, the Pôle bioalimentaire has launched efforts to accelerate the transition toward sustainable and resilient food systems by drawing inspiration from best practices around the world. We invite you to explore this experience through a series of four free webinars presented by students who participated in the Pôle’s international missions. This webinar presents the international mission to Denmark and Sweden.

Summary

In sum, the mission to Denmark and Sweden confirms that a credible food system transition relies on concrete, measurable tools, but above all on the ability to align innovations, public policies, data, and territories. The Nordic countries demonstrate that it is possible to rapidly reduce emissions at the source, secure water through blue–green infrastructure, and scale up proven practices (ration optimization, resource reuse, symbiotic greenhouses, multifunctional basins) when governance is built on clear targets, shared indicators, and transparent incentives.

We return with a pragmatic conviction: Quebec already has the assets to accelerate—innovative sectors, leading research centers, engaged companies, and communities ready to co-create. The next step lies in better connecting these strengths through a common language of indicators (carbon–water–biodiversity–nutrition), roadmaps that prioritize scaling, and stable bridges between institutions, industry, and civil society. By fostering this overall coherence, each innovation can become a lasting capability supporting a more resilient, inclusive, and resource-efficient food system, designed by and for people.

Beyond technical insights, this mission highlights that transforming food systems also depends on a culture of collaboration and a shared sense of the common good. The exchanges in Sweden and Denmark show that progress can be rapid when stakeholders embrace experimentation, listening, and co-creation. Above all, we bring back an approach grounded in humility, creativity, and trust—one that paves the way for simple yet transformative solutions. These learnings invite us to strengthen spaces in Quebec where innovation and inclusion advance together.
