Summary
Brazil is a source of inspiration for Canada, with public health and food policies closely aligned with Canadian priorities. As part of the Pôle bioalimentaire’s international missions at Institut sur la nutrition et les aliments fonctionnels (INAF), a multidisciplinary team traveled to Brazil from October 22 to November 1, 2025 to explore innovations in food quality, accessibility, and social inclusion. Twelve interviews were conducted across the states of São Paulo and Minas Gerais with stakeholders from research, policy, distribution centers, cooperatives, and private companies.
Key discussions addressed social inequalities, food insecurity, the sustainability of tropical agriculture under climate change, and the challenge of misinformation. Notable initiatives include the National School Feeding Program, which allocates a significant share of its budget to purchasing food from family farming, thereby supporting local producers while improving access to fresh food for students. Climate adaptation in agriculture also emerged as a priority, particularly through the distribution of irrigation kits to financially vulnerable smallholder farmers. However, misinformation remains a major barrier, as ultra-processed foods are often perceived as symbols of socio-economic success, especially among youth.
Overall, despite geographic differences, Brazil and Quebec share common concerns regarding food security and the promotion of local production. This mission highlights opportunities for mutually beneficial partnerships to address shared agri-food challenges.
