Pôle Bioalimentaire Webinar: The conditions and role of migrant workers in food systems in Quebec and Canada
As part of our free monthly webinar series, we invite you to learn more about the “Territorialized food systems” research initiative, led by Professor Laurence Guillaumie from Université Laval.
Summary
As part of this webinar, two invited speakers (Rosanne Blanchet and Martha Jane Robbins) will present their respective research on the conditions and role of migrant workers in food systems in Quebec and Canada.
Part 1 – Rosanne Blanchet, Université de Montréal
The project “#WeFeedYou, and yet…” examines how food security, diet, and health among temporary migrant workers (TMWs) in Quebec’s agri-food system are shaped by their living and working conditions. This presentation will share the first results of this participatory study and compare living and working conditions, as well as access to food, between TMWs employed in the agricultural sector and those working in food processing in Quebec.
Part 2 – Martha Jane Robbins, Erasmus University Rotterdam (presentation in English)
What is the role of migrant labour in Canadian food systems, particularly in local food systems? This presentation will explore the contradictions, tensions, and possibilities of farmers acting in solidarity with migrant farmworkers by examining the formation and political direction of the National Farmers Union’s Migrant Worker Solidarity Working Group (MWSWG).
