Expertises
Dr. Pierre-Olivier Méthot’s research focuses primarily on the philosophy and history of the biological and medical sciences (19th–21st centuries). To date, his historical work has centered mainly on the relationship between evolutionary theory and medicine, as well as on the foundations of bacteriology in the 19th and 20th centuries. His philosophical work focuses, among other things, on the role of evolutionary explanations in medical science, on the evolution of models and theories in ecology and epidemiology, as well as on the clarification and conceptual change of notions such as “virulence,” “disease,” “health,” “pathogen,” “emerging diseases,” and “pathocenosis.” He is also interested in broader questions in the philosophy of science (styles of reasoning, operationalism) as well as the history of the philosophy of science.
